Finally, an anterograde transsynaptic viral tracer! It’s a Christmas miracle!

Superorganism is the only person on the planet to see this morning’s issue of Neuron before me. Above, the olfactory system is traced from the inputs in the olfactory epithelium to downstream targets. Of special interest is Pir (piriform cortex), where random ensembles of neurons can be entrained to elicit aversive or appetitive behavior.

Where were you on the night on June 11, 2011? Were you in your hometown of Schiffdorf, northern Germany, contemplating the possibility that the excellent light conditions and passing storms would provide an excellent opportunity to capture a double rainbow? An elusive tertiary rainbow? Or even the as-yet-unobserved quaternary rainbow?
Journal of Applied Optics and the BBC report today that a quaternary rainbow has for the first time been observed in the wild. The first two rainbows appear behind the observer-away from the sun, where most rainbows are seen; the third and fourth are pictured. Notice that the color patterns are inverted between the two rainbows, owing to the fourth having refracted out of water droplets in the opposite direction of the third.

Today marks the 163rd anniversary of the impaling of Phineas Gage, a Vermont railroad foreman. An accidental explosion sent a metal rod (which he holds in the daguerreotype) through Gage’s cheek and out of the top of his skull, destroying his left frontal lobe. While this accident reportedly altered his cognitive function, it somehow did not kill Gage, who went on to become a celebrity of sorts and an object of study for neuroscientists and psychologists.
