This is the 6th Mardi Gras in a row that I’ve missed, and the passing always conjures up the same memories: an elderly woman stepping on my 10-year-old hand when I reached for a Bacchus doubloon in the grass; wrapping myself around streetlamps to catch a coconut at Zulu; that friend who was always carried home from parades, her friends just sober enough to drag her. Le sigh. 60% of the household still calls New Orleans home.

I adore Mardi Gras, and am inclined to mourn having missed it this year by looking through favorite old photos and listening to New Orleans music. I’m not sure if it helps or makes it worse, but I do know that these are some of my fondest memories, and there’s some damn fine music, too.
